Jason Newsted and Gary Kyes have maintained a close friendship for over 33 years, despite the twists and turns their lives have taken

Ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted and his high school buddy Gary Kyes have maintained a close friendship for over 33 years, despite the twists and turns their lives have taken. Their enduring bond is rooted in their shared passion for rock music, particularly bass guitar playing.

Their friendship began at Gull Lake High School in 1978, where Kyes, known for his cool car, impressive sound system, and popularity with the ladies, befriended Newsted, the new kid in class. Despite their different paths after high school – with Newsted enjoying a successful 15-year stint with Metallica while Kyes survived a near-fatal car crаsh in 1992 – their connection remained unbreakable, centered around their mutual love for music.

Kyes defied doctors’ grim predictions of permanent paralysis and went on to establish a recording studio, inspiring many with his resilience. Throughout his journey, Newsted’s unwavering support and friendship served as a source of strength for Kyes, who affectionately refers to him as “Uncle Jason.”

In return, Kyes has kept Newsted grounded and connected to his roots, reminding him of the importance of staying true to oneself. Their friendship has weathered the ups and downs of life, offering mutual encouragement and inspiration.

Despite the physical distance between them, Newsted made a point to visit Kyes in the hospital after his аccident, providing much-needed comfort and support. Their shared love for music remained a constant source of joy and inspiration, with Newsted even bringing painting supplies to Kyes’ house during a holiday visit, leading to a creative collaboration that continues to this day.

Their story serves as a testament to the enduring power of friendship and the transformative influence of music in overcoming life’s challenges. Through thick and thin, Newsted and Kyes have remained steadfast companions, bonded by their shared experiences and love for rock music.
