Metallica expresses support for Detroit Lions ahead of 49ers game: ‘In Dan we trust’

In anticipation of the Lions-49ers game, Metallica expressed their support for the Detroit Lions, further fueling their well-documented love affair with Lions coach Dan Campbell. Despite being rooted in the Bay Area, the home of the San Francisco 49ers, the legendary metal band left no room for doubt about where their allegiance lies.

The interaction unfolded on the Detroit Lions’ official Instagram feed, where a post featuring the lyrics of Metallica’s “No Leaf Clover” accompanied an intense image of Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, ready for battle amidst a smoke-filled background. Seizing the opportunity, the official @Metallica account responded in the comments with a vote of confidence: “In Dan we trust,” accompanied by the hashtag, “#OnePride.”

While Metallica’s connection to the Bay Area technically aligns them with the 49ers, their allegiance to Lions coach Dan Campbell transcends geographical boundaries. Campbell’s deep appreciation for Metallica has been well-documented, earning him the playful nickname “Dantallica” from former Texas A&M teammate and roommate Shane Lechler.

The Lions coach frequently expressed his admiration for the band during the 2022 HBO series “Hard Knocks,” where he even referenced the “No Leaf Clover” song from the “S&M” album, a collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony. In return, Metallica’s James Hetfield gave a shoutout to the Lions in 2022, expressing his support and playfully suggesting the team should be granted a bye week to attend Metallica’s concerts at Ford Field.

Although the Lions were away that weekend, facing the Los Angeles Chargers, Hetfield made a lighthearted gesture by taking a photo outside Campbell’s office with a caption reading, “Wish you were here, Coach!” Campbell, in turn, continued to profess his admiration for Metallica, highlighting the band’s enduring ability to adapt and produce hits.

Despite Metallica featuring in the 49ers’ pre-game playlists at Levi’s Stadium, the flame of camaraderie between Metallica and Dan Campbell remains unwavering. Regardless of the outcome of the game, the enduring connection promises to endure. And in the event of a Lions Super Bowl victory, the expectation is set for Metallica to provide the soundtrack to the championship celebration.
