Metallica’s Robert Trujillo didn’t know what former Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg looked like until they joined Infectious Grooves

Metallica’s bassist, Robert Trujillo, recently revealed that he had never seen his Infectious Grooves bandmate, former Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg, without his iconic mask until they began rehearsing together. Trujillo, who co-founded Infectious Grooves with Suicidаl Tendencies singer Mike Muir in 1989 before joining Metallica in 2003, expressed his excitement at finally meeting Weinberg during an interview with Wall Of Sound Australia.

“I was excited to finally meet [Weinberg],” Trujillo stated. “And I was a big fan, or I am a big fan, of his dad’s playing [Max Weinberg of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band], so it was kind of a surreal thing for me. It’s like, ‘Wow, this drummer from Slipknot. I only ever see this dude in the mask.’ And it’s, like, ‘Who is he?’”

Trujillo went on to reveаl, “I didn’t know what he looked like even. And that was pretty funny, ’cause I almost didn’t wanna know what he looked like until we were in that room rehearsing together, and that’s how it was.”

Weinberg, who joined Slipknot in 2013 after replacing the late Joey Jordison, drummed on three albums before being dismissed from the band in November 2023. His departure sparked speculation among fans regarding his replacement, with many suggesting former Sepultura drummer Eloy Casagrande. Meanwhile, Weinberg has been busy recording new material with Infectious Grooves and has officially joined Suicidаl Tendencies earlier this month, expanding his musical endeavors beyond Slipknot.
