The feud between Dave Mustaine and Metallica has been one of the most famous rivalries in metal history. When Did Dave Mustaine and Metallica Stop Feuding?
The feud between Dave Mustaine and Metallica has been one of the most famous rivalries in metal history. In the second installment of our Behind the Feud series, we explore the origins, development, and resolution of this legendary cоnflict.
Most metalheads know that Dave Mustaine was originally Metallica’s guitarist before being fired in early 1983 due to his destructive behavior fueled by alcоhоl. This pivotal moment led to Mustaine forming Megadeth, igniting a longstanding rivalry between the two thrash metal giants.
Mustaine was vocal about his bitterness toward his former bandmates, frequently expressing his feelings in the press. Meanwhile, Metallica’s James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich also made their share of critical remarks, keeping the feud alive. However, by the 1990s, tensions began to ease.
A significant moment in their reconciliation came with the release of Metallica’s documentary Some Kind of Monster in 2004. The film featured a candid conversation between Ulrich and Mustaine, allowing them to address some of their issues. Then, in 2011, Mustaine played onstage with Metallica for the first time since 1983 during their 30th-anniversary concerts in California.
Though there have been occasional flare-ups between Mustaine and his former bandmates, their relationship today is much healthier than it was decades ago. Both Metallica and Megadeth have achieved immense success, and fans have benefited from the incredible music both bands continue to produce.
