In a recent conversation on the “Everblack” podcast, Robert Trujillo opened up about the experience of watching his 19-year-old son, Tye, perform with SUICIDаL TENDENCIES. Trujillo, known for his extensive work as METALLICA’s bassist, reflected on his own beginnings with the Mike Muir-led group and how Tye’s journey has unfolded.
When asked if he provided any guidance to Tye as he embarked on his venture with SUICIDаL TENDENCIES, Trujillo remarked that while Tye occasionally sought advice, he primarily forged his path as an independent musician. Tye’s proficiency extends beyond bass to guitar playing and songwriting, distinguishing him as a versatile artist in his own right. Trujillo highlighted Tye’s active involvement in multiple bands alongside SUICIDаL TENDENCIES, showcasing his commitment to music.
Explaining how Tye secured the opportunity with SUICIDаL TENDENCIES, Trujillo recounted a serendipitous moment when the band needed a fill-in bassist due to visa issues faced by their current member. Mike Muir, recognizing Tye’s talent and having previously witnessed his capabilities during a stint with KORN, reached out to him. Trujillo fondly recalled Tye’s baptism into the world of SUICIDаL TENDENCIES, where he found himself onstage alongside seasoned musicians like Dave Lombardo, navigating both the musical intricacies and the occasional rugby-inspired mishap. Since then, Tye has become an integral part of the band while also pursuing his own projects.
Beyond his immediate family, Trujillo emphasized that creativity permeates their household. His wife is actively involved in music, art, and fashion endeavors, while his daughter dedicates several hours each day to drum practice. Trujillo described their home as a hub of artistic expression, where music and art intertwine seamlessly. He humorously noted that passersby might mistake their residence for a chaotic enclave of creativity, given the constant buzz of activity emanating from within.

Alongside his work with SUICIDаL TENDENCIES, Trujillo and Muir collaborated on the funk-infused project INFECTIOUS GROOVES, further expanding their musical repertoire.
