METALLICA’s James Hetfield to Feature on APOCALYPTICA’s Cover of ‘One’

Finnish cello rockers APOCALYPTICA are set to release their cover of METALLICA’s iconic track “One” on Friday, May 17. This rendition will feature METALLICA frontman James Hetfield and bassist Robert Trujillo, adding a unique twist to the classic song. The cover is part of APOCALYPTICA’s forthcoming album, “Apocalyptica Plays Metallica Vol. 2,” which will be available on June 7 through Throwdown Entertainment. This album continues the journey APOCALYPTICA began in 1996, when the classically trained cellists from Helsinki’s renowned Sibelius Academy paid symphonic tribute to METALLICA, one of heavy metal’s biggest names.

APOCALYPTICA shared their excitement, stating, “We have something very special for you! We’ve been keeping a huge sеcrеt. Our new album ‘Plays Metallica Vol. 2’ is coming out June 7th. Now, it’s time to reveаl some cool surprises! The third single, a new version of ‘One,’ features the master himself, James Hetfield, and also Rоb Trujillo! This is an incredible honor for us. Pre-save the single now because it’s going to blоw your mind!”

APOCALYPTICA’s lead cellist, Perttu Kivilaakso, explained on the DJ Force X Podcast how Trujillo’s involvement came about. He mentioned that the concept of this album had been in their minds for years. After the pаndemic, it felt like the right time to revisit their roots. Kivilaakso noted their long-standing supportive relationship with METALLICA and how Trujillo’s offer to participate was a tremendous honor.

When “Apocalyptica Plays Metallica Vol. 2” was announced, APOCALYPTICA expressed their excitement about working with Trujillo, whom they regard as one of the greatest bass players in the world. Eicca Toppinen, APOCALYPTICA’s leader, commented on the organic development of this collaboration and how they aimed to challenge themselves by bringing a fresh perspective to METALLICA’s energy and emotion.

Kivilaakso also reflected on the significance of this album, sharing how playing these favorite METALLICA tracks brings back the same excitement they felt in their youth. The upcoming album marks the final studio release with drummer Mikko Sirén, who is departing the band amicably after its completion. “Plays Metallica Vol. 2” is produced by Joe Barresi, known for his work with QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, SOUNDGARDEN, NINE INCH NAILS, and TOOL.

To support the release, APOCALYPTICA will tour across Europe. Sirén, who began performing with the band in 2003 and became a full-time member in 2005, leaves after a long and successful tenure.

In a 2019 interview with Australia’s Heavy magazine, APOCALYPTICA’s Paavo Lötjönen reflected on the impact of their 1996 debut “Plays Metallica By Four Cellos.” The album, composed entirely of METALLICA covers, showcased their classical skills and paved the way for their original music. The band has been playing this album in full at select live dates since its 20th anniversary in 2016.

Lötjönen described the nostalgic experience of playing these songs live, noting how music acts as a time machine, bringing back the feelings from their early years. He emphasized that METALLICA’s music remаins strong and passionate, and performing these songs continues to be a joyful experience.

In 2015, Lötjönen and Kivilaakso recalled joining METALLICA on stage during the band’s 30th anniversary celebration in San Francisco. They felt privileged and honored to be included among such esteemed artists, reflecting on their journey from supporting METALLICA in 1996 to playing alongside their idols.

The connection between APOCALYPTICA and METALLICA has always been strong, and this new collaboration further cements their mutual respect and admiration.
