Metal and Symphony Converge: Apocalyptica’s Newest Album Honors Metallica’s Influence

From Cello Covers to Collaborations: Apocalyptica’s Epic Journey Through Metallica’s Realm

Apocalyptica, the legendary band known for their unique blend of classical training and metal mastery, is poised to make history once again with their latest venture. Their upcoming release, “Apocalyptica Plays Metallica Vol. 2,” promises to be a testament to their enduring relationship with Metallica and their own evolution within the heavy metal genre.

It was three decades ago when Apocalyptica first emerged onto the scene, wielding cellos as their unconventional instruments of choice. With their groundbreaking debut album, “Plays Metallica By Four Cellos,” released in 1996, they challenged the norms of heavy music and captivated audiences worldwide.

Originating in 1993 at the prestigious Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, Apocalyptica began as a tribute to Metallica by four classically-trained musicians. However, their innovative interpretation of metal classics propelled them to unprecedented heights of success.

Reflecting on their humble beginnings, founding member Eicca Toppinen reminisces, “We just loved Metallica and we wаnted to play it with the instruments we were able to play, which just happened to be cellos.” The band’s unexpecteԀ journey from playing in metal clubs to opening for Metallica themselves remаins a testament to their extraordinary rise to prominence.

Since then, Apocalyptica has sold over six million records worldwide, embarked on extensive tours across the globe, and collaborated with a diverse array of artists, including Ville Valo of HIM, Corey Taylor of Slipknot, and Dave Lombardo of Slayer.

Yet, perhaps their most notable achievement lies in their enduring connection with Metallica. Not only have they graced the stage at Metallica’s 30th-anniversary shows in 2011, but they’ve also cultivated a deep friendship grounded in mutual admiration between the musicians.

Inspired by the success of their 25th-anniversary tour for “Plays Metallica By Four Cellos,” Apocalyptica embarked on a new endeavor culminating in the creation of “Plays Metallica, Vol. 2.” Produced by Joe Barresi, the album transcends mere compilation status; it serves as a celebration of Metallica’s vast creative repertoire and dynamic spirit.

Perttu Kivilaakso shares his excitement, stating, “We’ve been talking about making another Metallica album for around 20 years, as there were still so many great songs we wаnted to play!” The opportunity to revisit their favorite tracks from their youth imbues the project with a profound sense of nostalgia and passion.

What distinguishes this album is the inclusion of Metallica bassist Rоb Trujillo on a powerful rendition of ‘The Four Horsemen,’ marking a significant milestone in Apocalyptica’s journey. Eicca expresses his admiration, stating, “It’s the coolest thing. We didn’t push – it was offered.” The collaboration exemplifies Metallica’s willingness to explore new avenues and push artistic boundaries—an ethos shared by Apocalyptica.

With “Plays Metallica, Vol. 2,” Apocalyptica not only pays homage to one of metal’s greatest bands but also cements their own legacy as trailblazers within the genre.
