Metallica, Joni Mitchell, and Annie Lennox were among the artists who paid tribute to Elton John at the Gershwin Prize Ceremony

Metallica, Joni Mitchell, Annie Lennox, and other notable musicians came together to pay tribute to Elton John and Bernie Taupin as they received the esteemed Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. The ceremony, which aired on PBS, showcased performances by various artists such as Metallica, Joni Mitchell, Annie Lennox, Garth Brooks, Brandi Carlile, and more.

Taking place at the DAR Constitution Hall in Washingtоn, D.C. on March 20th, the event also featured appearances by Garth Brooks, Charlie Puth, Maren Morris, Jacob Lusk, and host Billy Porter. Highlights included Metallica’s rendition of “Funeral for a Friend” and “Love Lies Bleeding,” Mitchell’s unique take on “I’m Still Standing” alongside Carlile and Lennox, Porter’s performance of “The BitcҺ Is Back,” and others.

Elton John himself concluded the evening with memorable performances of “Mona Lisa and Mаd Hatters,” “Saturday Night’s Alright for FigҺting,” and “Your Song,” joined by Taupin. Expressing their gratitude, John remarked on the honor of receiving the Gershwin Prize, highlighting the longstanding collaboration between him and Taupin. Taupin, in turn, expressed his humility and joy at being recognized alongside esteemed American songwriters.
