Subtropical and tropical moist mountain forests in South America are home to a beautiful bird. The feathery green and black fruiteater is a stunning example of nature’s beauty.

The 18 cm (7 inch) green and black fruiteater has a unique body. It stands out from other birds with its dazzling blend of yellow and green feathers on a plump, stocky physique.

These birds inhabit eastern Andean subtropical and tropical environments in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. They mostly eat fruits from the Chloranthaceae (Hedyosmum sp.), Ericaceae, and Melastomataceae families. While fruits are their main food, cotingas may occasionally eat animal materials.

The green and black fruiteater breeds throughout the Central and Western mountain ranges from January to July when nature awakens. They carefully build cup-shaped nests with moss and fragile roots on 1–2 meter-high shrubs. The female lays creamy eggs with reddish-brown speckles in these nests, demonstrating reproduction’s complexity.
