Olive-backed sunbird: Found in South Asia, Australia and the Pacific islands, with impressive blue-black neck feathers



For bird lovers, the Olive-backed Sunbird may be familiar. This little, nimble bird from Southern Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands is known for its iridescent plumage that sparkles like rainbows in sunshine. 

Male sunbirds have a blue-black throat, while females have a bright yellow throat and eyebrow. Both sexes have a bright yellow beak, olive back, and wings with truncated margins that gently unfold during flight.

This charming bird is part of the Nectariniidae family, which includes other colorful birds such as sunbirds, spiderhunters, and flowerpeckers. 

Scientifically known as Cinnyris jugularis, its name evokes a “unequal-jawed fігe-Ьeɩɩу.” The bird’s unique lower mandible and fiery red color are reflected in its name. Featuring 21 distinct variations, each with unique colors and distribution.
