Recent Updates: Robert Trujillo Expresses Interest in Reviving His Former Band, MASS MENTALFeaturing Future Skindred Vocalist Benji Webbe and Drummer Brooks Wackerman.
Mass Mentаl, a band that briefly showcased the talents of Robert Trujillo, now renowned as Metallica’s bassist, alongside future Skindred vocalist Benji Webbe, has resurfaced in discussions. Initially formed in the late 1990s, Mass Mentаl released their sole album titled “How To Write Love Songs” in 1999, which featured Brooks Wackerman, currently of Avenged Sevenfold, on drums.
They followed up with a live album, “Live In Tokyo,” in 2000, featuring Roy Mayorga, now known for his work with Ministry. Despite a brief reunion for live performances between 2014 and 2016, Mass Mentаl faded into obscurity. However, Trujillo hints at a potential resurrection of the band.
In a recent interview with Metal Hammer, Trujillo revealed that he maintains a close friendship with Webbe and shared that his children have expressed interest in seeing Mass Mentаl return to the stage.
“Benji is a longtime friend, going back to his days with Dub Wаr,” Trujillo stated. “I first discovered them in 1995 when their music was playing in a club in New Zealand. My kids often ask me when we’re going to do Mass Mentаl again because they love our music!”
Acknowledging the challenges posed by his busy schedule, Trujillo remаins optimistic about the prоspect of reuniting Mass Mentаl for a live show.
“Coordinating our schedules can be tricky these days,” Trujillo admitted. “But over the past three decades, I’ve been fortunate enough to collaborate with some of my favorite musicians. Benji is undoubtedly one of them, and it’s always a joy to reunite with him for a Mass Mentаl performance every decade or so.”
Reflecting on their last show in London at the Electric Ballroom, Trujillo expressed enthusiasm for potentially organizing another reunion, possibly aligning with Metallica’s schedule for an anniversary celebration.
“Perhaps we can plan something to coincide with Metallica’s schedule,” Trujillo suggested. “Our last reunion was a memorable event with guest appearances from Mark King of Level 42 and Phil Campbell from Motörhead. It was truly a remarkable celebration!”
For those unfamiliar with Mass Mentаl’s funky and groovy sound, Trujillo encourages listeners to explore their album “How To Write Love Songs.”
As discussions surrounding Mass Mentаl’s potential revival continue, fans eagerly anticipate the possibility of experiencing their unique blend of music once again.
