Jason Newsted’s initial clаsh with Metallica stemmed from a collaboration with Devin Townsend, as revealed in a recent interview with Metal Hammer. Recalling the events that led to his departure from the band, Newsted described how disagreements arose over his involvement in side projects, including his collaboration with Townsend.
Back in the ’90s, Newsted invited Townsend, then 22 years old, to collaborate shortly after establishing the Chophouse studio. Describing Townsend as an “absolute maniac” with minimal sleep during their collaboration, Newsted detailed the raw production process of their work together at the Chophouse.
However, tensions surfaced when Metallica members learned about Newsted’s side projects. Lars Ulrich confronted Newsted about the collaboration, emphasizing the importance of loyalty to Metallica. Newsted admitted his ignorance of the politics involved and expressed regret over the situation, breаking down in front of Ulrich and James Hetfield.
Despite the conflicts, Newsted continued his creative endeavors, with the Chophouse remaining a significant part of his musical journey. In recent years, he has performed with The Chophouse Band, channeling his passion for Americana music while supporting various charities through his performances.
