‘That was a special adventure – I wouldn’t be here without him’: Robert Trujillo expresses his desire to collaborate with Ozzy Osbourne again and shares his interest in resurrecting the classic cult supergroup.

The year 2023 was indeed eventful for Metallica, with the release of 72 Seasons and the extensive M72 World Tour dominating their schedule. However, bassist Robert Trujillo found himself even more occupied, reuniting with his former band Suicidаl Tendencies for some memorable appearances.

Looking ahead to 2024, Trujillo reveals to Hammer his plans for an upcoming documentary about Metallica superfans and hints at tour dates extending into 2025. Amidst his commitments, he expresses his openness to reconnecting with Ozzy Osbourne for a potential follow-up project to 2022’s Patient Number 9, in which he also contributed.

Reflecting on his collaboration with Osbourne, Trujillo expresses his enduring loyalty, stating, “Well, you know I’m always there for him! Whatever he needs from me, I’ll always do my best. I’ll always cherish my years with Ozzy and was so lucky to be able to work with him again on [Patient Number 9], which even won a couple of Grammys. That was another special adventure – I wouldn’t be here without him.”

However, Osbourne isn’t the sole focus of Trujillo’s interests. 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of How To Write Love Songs, the only album from his supergroup project Mass Mentаl. Fronted by Benji Webbe, the band played reunion shows from 2014 to 2016.

Expressing his fondness for Webbe, Trujillo shares, “I always love to see Benji – he’s my man and I’ve loved him since Dub Wаr. I discovered them when a DJ was playing their music in a club in New Zealand back in ’95, so we go way back, and my kids sometimes ask ‘when are you gonna do Mass Mentаl again’ because they love that stuff!”

However, Trujillo acknowledges the logistical challenges of reuniting Mass Mentаl due to conflicting schedules. Despite this, he remаins optimistic about the possibility of future collaborations, suggesting the idea of aligning a reunion with Metallica’s schedule for a celebratory event. Reflecting on past performances, he recalls, “The last one was actually in London, I think, at the Electric Ballroom, so I’d sаy we’re due! Maybe I’ll look at Metallica’s schedule and see if we can get a party going to celebrate the anniversary – last time we had Mark King from Level 42, Phil [Campbell] from Motorhead, it was just a big party!”
