Greg Fidelman, Metallica’s long-standing producer since 2008, recently shared insights into the band’s creative process on “The Metallica Report” podcast. Fidelman, often regarded as the unofficial fifth member of Metallica, transitioned from being a guitarist in his own band to a Grammy-winning producer, working with renowned artists like Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Adele, Red Hоt Chili Peppers, and Slayer.
Metallica’s drummer, Lars Ulrich, hailed Fidelman as the “great unsung hero,” responsible for shaping the band’s sound and production since their “Deаth Magnetic” album. Fidelman recounted meeting Metallica during the “Deаth Magnetic” project, joining forces with Rick Rubin. Despite the lack of a formal introduction period, Fidelman quickly integrated into the band’s dynamic, earning their trust over time.
Reflecting on their relationship, Fidelman noted the shared musical background and experiences that facilitated their collaboration. Their bond strengthened through studio sessions and mutual appreciation for similar music, fostering a comfortable environment for creative exploration.
Metallica’s most recent album, “72 Seasons,” released in April 2023, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 146,000 equivalent album units in its first week. Produced by Fidelman alongside James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, “72 Seasons” marked Metallica’s return with new material since “Hardwired…To Self-Destruct” and achieved significant commercial success in the rock and hard rock genres.
