James Hetfield Discusses Safety Measures for Pyrotechnics at Metallica Shows: “No More Onstage Barbecues”

The Metallica frontman, well acquainted with the excitement and risks of onstage pyrotechnic displays, reflects on the improved safety protocols for pyrotechnics at Metallica concerts, especially following his infamous pyro аccident in 1992.

On the latest episode of The Metallica Report podcast, Hetfield acknowledges the lessons learned over the years in terms of what works and what doesn’t. He underscores the significance of “spotters,” individuals dedicated to monitoring the band members’ movements onstage to ensure their safety.

“While we’re on stage and focused on the riffs, playing music,” Hetfield shares, “these guys need to understand that the band is crucial, so please don’t jeopardize them. No more onstage barbecues.”

Hetfield notes that Metallica’s pyrotechnic team shares the band’s passion for their craft.

“They have a love for it like we have a love for music,” Hetfield states. “They aim to make it exciting. They will test the boundaries, evaluating what’s possible and what’s not. They find that middle ground where it’s pushing the limits a little but not too much.”

“We appreciate having a team of safety-conscious individuals who are still a bit daring,” he adds.

Metallica, along with their pyrotechnic displays, will make a comeback when their M72 world tour resumes in May.
