Elton John’s Gershwin Prize Tribute Special to Showcase Diverse Lineup Including Brandi Carlile, Metallica, Garth Brooks, and Annie Lennox

The upcoming Gershwin Prize tribute for Elton John promises to be a star-studded affair, as announced recently. Leading the pack is Elton’s close friend and musical collaborator Brandi Carlile, alongside unexpected but exciting additions such as Metallica.

Joining them on stage will be country music legend Garth Brooks, who himself was honored with the Gershwin Prize for songwriting by the Library of Congress four years ago, and the incomparable Annie Lennox. Also slated to perform are Maren Morris, Charlie Puth, and Jacob Lusk from the group Gabriels, with the multi-talented Billy Porter taking on hosting duties as well as gracing the stage with a performance. Of course, Elton John himself, along with his long-time songwriting partner Bernie Taupin, will also make appearances.

Metallica’s participation might raise eyebrows initially, but considering their shared admiration for Elton John, it’s not entirely surprising. Elton’s rendition of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” on the “Metallica Blacklist” tribute album is testament to their mutual respect, with Elton even hailing the band as one of the best in their genre.

Several of the artists involved have previously covered Elton John’s songs, offering a glimpse into what might unfold during the tribute. Morris has lent her voice to “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters,” while Brooks has put his spin on “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” and “Rocket Man” in the past. Similarly, Carlile has frequently performed “Rocket Man” and shared a memorable duet of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” with Elton during his farewell concerts.

Although lesser-known in the U.S., the inclusion of Gabriels further emphasizes Elton John’s eclectic taste. His personal endorsement of the group, inviting them to perform at his annual benefit Oscar viewing party, speaks volumes about their talent and appeal.

The tribute special, officially titled “Elton John & Bernie Taupin: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song,” is set to air on PBS stations on April 8 at 8 p.m. local time in most markets. Viewers can also catch it via streaming on PBS.org and the PBS app. The show will be recorded in Washington, D.C. on March 20, with tickets exclusively reserved and not available to the general public.

Co-produced by WETA, Ken Ehrlich Productions, and the Library of Congress, this event promises to be a fitting celebration of Elton John’s enduring influence and contribution to popular music.
