Courtney LaPlante of Spiritbox, angry over Metallica’s Grammy win. Is that true?

After the 2024 Grammy Awards, a wave of controversy swept through the alternative music community following a post on X (formerly Twitter). The post featured a fabricated quote attributed to Courtney LaPlante of Spiritbox, insinuating resentment over Metallica’s Grammy win. LaPlante promptly refuted the alleged remarks and instead expressed her delight at meeting bassist Robert Trujillo during the event.

Spiritbox had been nominated for Best Metal Performance at the 66th ceremony, competing alongside Metallica with their song “Jaded.” Trujillo graciously accepted the award on behalf of Metallica, emphasizing the band’s camaraderie and collaborative spirit, particularly evident in the creation of their latest album, “72 Seasons.”

Subsequently, a now-deleted fabricated quote attributed to LaPlante circulated on the Discog Discourse page, sparking widespread controversy. Despite the page’s clarification that the quote was fictitious, LaPlante felt cоmpelled to address the situation due to its extensive dissemination.

“This is fabricated,” she asserted, adding, “I’ve received numerous messages about this, and it’s the opposite of my sentiments. It’s an honor to lose to Metallica.” While acknowledging the role of satire, LaPlante stressed the importance of executing it properly to convey its intended message.

“Effective satire or sarcasm doesn’t necessitate clarification,” she remarked. In her response, LaPlante also touched upon the challenge of ensuring that the audience interprets the intended tone of the message accurately.

Despite the controversy, LaPlante maintained a positive stance, focusing on the honor of being nominated alongside Metallica and cherishing the memorable encounter with bassist Trujillo during the event.
