Cliff Burton joined METALLICA in 1982 after catching the band’s attention with his performance alongside TRAUMA. Unwilling to relocate to Los Angeles, where METALLICA was based, the band opted to move to the San Francisco area, enabling Burton to join their ranks.

Burton played a pivotal role in METALLICA’s first three studio albums – “Kιll ‘Em All,” “Ride The Lightning,” and “Master Of Puppets” – contributing to classic tracks like “Ride The Lightning,” “For Whom The Bell Tolls,” “Fade To Black,” “Creeping Deаth,” and “Master Of Puppets.”

His life was tragically cut short at the age of 24 in a tour bus crаsh on September 27, 1986, in Sweden.

Jason Newsted took over as Burton’s initial replacement, remaining in the lineup until 2001, after which Robert Trujillo joined in 2003 and continues to be part of the band.

On February 10, 2018, Alameda County supervisors declared it “Cliff Burton Day” to commemorate what would have been the late bassist’s 56th birthday.

Reflecting on Burton’s tragic loss in 2016, METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich shared how the band coped with the devastating event and the subsequent decision to audition bass players. He emphasized the need to keep going and honor Burton’s spirit.

In a separate interview, METALLICA frontman James Hetfield addressed how Burton might have responded to the band’s significant changes in appearance and sound during the 1990s and early 2000s. Hetfield acknowledged potential resistance from Burton and expressed his discomfort with the “alternative” image METALLICA adopted during that period.

Burton’s remarkable talent and legacy were detailed in the book “To Live Is To Ԁie: The Life And Deаth Of Metallica’s Cliff Burton,” published globally in 2009 by author Joel McIver and Jawbone Press, featuring a foreword by METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett.
