Mike Epps is deeply engaged in a meaningful initiative, focusing on the revitalization of homes in his former neighborhood.
In a glimpse into his real estate endeavors in 2020, the actor showcased a meticulously restored house on his Indiana neighborhood block, Fall Creek, alongside his wife, Kyra Epps.
Expressing a profound connection to his roots, Epps took to Instagram to share the transformative journey, underlining the importance of ownership.
He asserted, “A lot of people claim a Hood, a city, or a block but don’t own it. This is my block in Indiana, the before and after with family and friends in the homes. They movin us out of our communities at a rapid pace.”
Reflecting on his personal history in the neighborhood, Epps candidly discussed the challenges he faced, including arrests and the loss of friends to violence and drugs.
Despite the troubled past of the area, he highlighted the positive transformation, stating, “In this neighborhood was a full crack house in the 80’s and 90’s, look at it now. God Is Good. I tell all the youngsters to invest in real estate; it will take care of you…oh and I had this land for 25 years or better not bragging just tryin to inspire.”
Operating under the banner of “Buying Back the Block,” the Eppses initiated a mission to rejuvenate homes, particularly in gentrified neighborhoods, over the past two summers. Epps shared insights into their strategic approach during an interview on “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” outlining their early investments in houses in gentrified areas.
He emphasized the significant increase in property values over the years, noting, “Those houses maybe about 15, 20 years ago, they were $5 each house. Now they are worth $200,000. So, that’s the layout that they’re doing in these cities.”
Motivated by a desire to showcase their efforts and inspire others, Epps articulated his vision for an HGTV show. He aimed to document their journey of returning to their roots and actively contributing to the community. Keeping true to his words, the couple is set to feature in HGTV’s upcoming show, “Buying Back the Block,” scheduled to premiere in spring 2023, offering viewers a firsthand look into their commitment to revitalizing neighborhoods and making a positive impact
