Oakton High School’s marching band, known for their performance titled “Parade to Black,” emerged victorious in Metallica’s inaugural “For Whom the Bell Tolls” competition, securing the top spot in the small high school category. The winning entry showcased a captivating medley of Metallica hits, including “The Unforgiven,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and “Enter Sandman.” The band’s choreography, highlighted by a drum solo and enthusiastic Ԁevil horn gestures from members, contributed to its success.
This achievement is particularly noteworthy considering the fierce competition, with over 450 colleges and high schools participating in Metallica’s contest. James Hetfield, Metallica’s lead singer and guitarist, announced the competition in a video last spring that garnered significant attention. In the Division 1 college category, Auburn University claimed victory with their impressive Metallica halftime show from October, while Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, Tennessee, triumphed in the large high school category. As a reward for their outstanding performance, Oakton’s marching band will receive $15,000 worth of instruments and equipment from Metallica and its sponsors. Band director Jamie VanValkenburg expressed his disbelief and excitement, stating, “It’s just surreal to me that one of my all-time favorite bands is going to watch my band.” Oakton’s win further strengthens the local ties between Metallica and the community, following the band’s majority stake acquisition in Alexandria’s Furnace Record Pressing the previous year.
