Lead singer and guitarist James Hetfield and bassist Robert Trujillo disclosed their favorite live performances from Metallica’s repertoire on The Metallica Report podcast.
Both initially highlighted their favorites from the band’s latest album, 72 Seasons.
“It depends on the show and the mood,” Hetfield says. “I love playing new songs. I greatly enjoy playing Shadows Follow. It’s an atypical, forward-driving song. You have to focus on it because there are all kinds of little things to remember. It’s bouncy and propels forward. I like that.”
“Shadows Follow is enjoyable to play because it has a good balance with the background vocals, and it’s always challenging,” Trujillo adds. “It grooves and twists. Another noteworthy song is You Must Bur𝚗. It’s a fun song. James and I have nice vocal harmonies in it.”
Regarding classics, Hetfield leans towards the band’s power ballad.
“I always enjoy playing Nothing Else Matters,” Hetfield says. “I see people hugging each other and crying… It has a completely different atmosphere amidst all the chaos and moshing. The energy flows more inward. It’s amazing to watch. I like seeing people’s vulnerability during the song.”
On the other hand, Trujillo favors instrumentals.
“I’ve enjoyed playing The Call of Ktulu,” Trujillo states. “I feel like I found my place in it, and it’s the ultimate tribute to Cliff Burton — both Orion and The Call of Ktulu — so I’ve enjoyed performing it.”
