Mark Tremonti highlights a distinctive aspect where Metallica outshone their contemporaries, comparisons between James Hetfield and Kirk Hammet

Mark Tremonti, a dedicated Metallica fan, openly acknowledges the profound influence the band has had on his musical journey. In a recent interview with Guitar World, Tremonti expressed his gratitude towards Metallica, particularly crediting James Hetfield’s unique picking style as a significant inspiration. He highlighted how adopting Hetfield’s downpicking technique became a defining strength in his own playing, and even mentioned the specific way he holds his pick, influenced by the Metallica frontman.

Having come a long way since first encountering Metallica through his brother’s play of “Welcome Home (Sanitarium),” Tremonti now reflects on the distinctive qualities that set Metallica apart in the ’80s metal scene. For him, one of the key elements was their masterful use of dynamics, citing examples like the intricate intros of songs such as “Battery,” “Damage, Inc.,” and “The Call Of Ktulu.” Tremonti also praised the beauty found in tracks like “To Live Is To Die” and his all-time favorite, “Orion,” emphasizing Metallica’s ability to seamlessly transition between cleaner verses and impactful choruses.

Addressing the contrast between Metallica’s lead guitarist, Kirk Hammett, and rhythm guitarist, James Hetfield, Tremonti acknowledged their differences while underscoring the challenge Hammett faces in keeping up with Hetfield during high-speed riffs in live performances. He commended Hammett’s skill as an alternate picker and highlighted his influence on Tremonti’s appreciation for wah pedals, particularly Hammett’s use of one-string wah runs.

Tremonti emphasized the significance of having two distinct guitarists in a band, drawing parallels with his own collaboration with Myles Kennedy in Alter Bridge. He explained how their different styles complement each other, creating a diverse sonic landscape. In his eyes, Metallica’s approach of having two unique guitarists has been a consistent and integral part of their musical identity.

Mark Tremonti also took the opportunity to mention his new solo album, “Christmas Classics New & Old,” which is currently available.
