We all have those unforgettable moments in our lives, and for Kirk Hammett, the announcement of joining the iconic rock band Metallica is undoubtedly one of them. The enigmatic guitarist, known for his distinctive style, has carved out a remarkable musical career, and the pivotal moment of joining Metallica remains etched in his memory.

Before becoming the lead guitarist for the renowned rock band Metallica, Kirk Hammett spent some time with the band Exodus. Reflecting on the time before his Metallica days, after watching the band perform for the first time, Hammett casually remarked, “They are good. But it would be better with me.” Little did the charismatic guitarist know that one day he would receive an invitation to join this legendary band.

In a previously undisclosed interview from 2014, Kirk Hammett shared insights into the serendipity that led him to Metallica. In a rather peculiar twist of fate, he revealed that he received the call to join Metallica on April Fools’ Day. Mark Whittaker, the band’s sound engineer, made the call while Hammett was occupied in the bathroom. After hanging up, Hammett was incredulous, stating, “I couldn’t believe I just received that call. Is this an April Fools’ joke? Two days later, I received a tape from them, but I already had a demo, and I knew about two-thirds of the songs on it,” he added.

Regarding the reactions of his Exodus bandmates upon learning this news, Hammett mentioned that they were genuinely shocked. “I remember Paul Baloff being very shocked and angry. He couldn’t believe I could do that and then promptly poured a whole beer over my head.” In the interview, Kirk Hammett also expressed his confidence, affirming that joining Metallica would prove his worth entirely.

This “bold” entry into Metallica marked a significant turning point in Kirk Hammett’s career, showcasing the unexpected and unconventional path that led him to become an integral part of one of the greatest rock bands in history.
